Information on nonprofits and for nonprofitsThis program provides Hungarian NGOs with useful, easily accessible information. NIOK aims to be the primary source of information on Hungarian NGOs for those who want to learn more about Hungary's NGO sector and civic initiatives. Programmes include Hungary's most-used civil portal called www.nonprofit.hu with information needed throughout the life-cycle of organisations, an NGO newsletter in Hungarian with over 8000 subscribers, openly used database of NGOs in Hungary with contact, activity and financial details of 12 000 organisations, media monitoring and a hot line service to answer the questions of those interested in NGO issues.
Facilitation of civil dialogue, interest representation for the third sectorThis area of actions is focusing on strengthening links between public sector institutions and NGOs. NIOK is involved in interest representation in those cases affecting the NGO community as a whole (providing information and views for decision makers e.g. regarding 1% law, law on National Civil Fund, philanthropy development, etc.) NIOK is founder of the watchdog group monitoring the publicity of the civil dialogue related to the planning of the II. National Development Plan. With its partners NIOK also facilitates working groups elaborating general norms and standards of civil dialogue between public institutions and NGOs, and piloting its results with public institutions.
Nonprofit Service CenterThe aim of this project is to provide NGOs in Budapest and Pest County with hands-on assistance in their operation and management. The so-called "Civil House" functions as a service centre for NGOs in a number of ways providing training and counselling (in a variety of fields ranging from legal issues to accountancy), round table discussions with business and state actors, information assistance, publishing guidebooks, information and education leaflets, and a nonprofit library service.
Social responsibility, philanthropy developmentThe goal in this program area is to promote the emergence and development Hungarian private companies' and individuals' social responsibility. The most important programme is an annual information and media campaign, "Give a Share to the Civil Sector!", to promote 1% giving by taxpayers to NGOs. An international element has been added to this called the "Percentage Philanthropy Project" comparing similar 1-2% philanthropy systems in the region. The www.adhat.hu donation portal provides surface for matching needs and offers with guidelines and practical information about philanthropy for both sides. NIOK also runs an awards programme to promote socially responsible attitudes by highlighting good examples. In addition to this, NIOK also provides several companies and donors with individual assistance tailored to their needs.
